LCA & recycle/reuse

All the different raw materials/components to be used in the project will be assessed through REACH and CLP regulation to ensure their safety, environmental friendliness, sustainability and eco-efficient performances. LCA analysis will also be performed across the whole life cycle of the cells to assess the impact of key environmental parameters. The LCA will be carried out following ISO Standards. The work will also provide an eco-design approach as a real optimization tool for the whole process. In compliance with the new 2006/66/EC EU Directive (target of a minimum of 50% recycling rate) a new recycling route will be developed since existing processes (mainly metallurgy) cannot achieve this target as all salts and electrolyte are lost by combustion while lithium is trapped into slag. A cost analysis of the new cells will be constructed using data supplied by the project partners and compared to current cell costs.

MARS-EV project has the following aims:

  • To carry out regulatory assessment on Reach and CLP (GHS) aspects.
  • To carry out technical, economical and environmental optimization of the product.
  • To define an industrially optimized recycling process for the cells.
  • To evaluate the possible reutilization of the different battery components for further uses as precursors for making new active materials to close the loop (but back up for other end-user will be considered.
